Tips for Choosing the Right Ballroom Dance Shoes

A ballroom dance shoe is designed for a dancer’s body to help you move smoothly on the dance floor and to prevent injuries to your joints and knees, especially during salsa.

 

A dance shoe adds confidence and makes that entire experience much better. When you try on a pair of ballroom dance shoes for the very first time, you should ensure that they fit snugly (but not tightly). This way, you will be able to move well in them even before you break them in.  

Here are some tips that till be beneficial when choosing dancewear shoes: 

1. Find Dance Shoes with the Right Fit 

It is important that your dance shoes fit like a glove on your foot, especially around your ankle. They will stretch a bit after use, so make sure they are not too loose or tight. The right fit will allow for better movement on the floor, and a better connection to your partner and the music.  

2. Make Sure You Are Wearing the Correct Shoe Size 

Dance shoes are lighter weight than street shoes, making them more flexible with a suede or leather sole. Your dance shoe size will likely be the same as your street shoe size. If you have a thin foot, you may need to go half a size down. If your foot is broad, try half a size larger than your normal street shoe. It is important to remember that you want them to be snug but comfortable. 

3. Pick the Right Type of Heel 

For better balance and to produce a neat line, most women's salsa shoes include a heel. Dance shoe heel heights range from 0.5” to 4”. Between 2” and 3” is the most frequent height. Higher heels give the leg more form, but even a half-inch can make a significant impact. A beginner dancer should use shoes with a heel of 2.5” or less. The higher the heel, the more the weight is pushed forward to the ball of the foot. 

If you do decide to wear a higher heel, avoid any “street shoe” stiletto heels. Make sure they are in the lower range, so you feel confident and comfortable. Dance sneaker shoes have a lifted insole but are flat. Men should wear low-heeled shoes with a suede or leather sole.
